Overview
FMVSS 226 was adopted in 2011 in the US to reduce the risk of occupants being thrown from vehicles during side impact and rollover car crashes. The Ejection Mitigation Headform is designed to assess if the car has adequate safety measures in the side windows to prevent occupants from exiting the vehicle during an impact, and also measure the reaction time of any side curtain airbags if fitted. All cars will be expected to pass the tests by 2017 when they become compulsory and this will hopefully reduce the likelihood of complete and partial ejections of vehicle occupants through side windows during road traffic accidents.
Specification
The headform complies with FVVSS 226, Annex A. It weighs approx. 4.6kg including skin, skull, mounting block and accelerometers measuring three axes.
