IIHS Side Impact Barrier

Overview

In this instance, IIHS’s aim was to upgrade the test protocol compared to FMVSS 214, to include a deformable barrier and a test setup more representative of real world vehicles and accidents. In particular, SUVs and pickup trucks have become increasingly common in North America, a fact that should be reflected in crash testing. Numerous tests with various barrier versions and test setups were run by IIHS with this barrier before finalising the overall test procedure.
